unit 8 reflction

In this unit, we first learned about species, which are a group of individuals that can reproduce. the rise of two or more species from one existing is called speculation, some causes of speculation are behavioural isolation which is caused by changes in courtship mating behaviours or occupying different niches. another cause can be temporal isolation which is when timing prevents reproduction between population. another thing we covered was constant change and we also reviewed genes and alleles. natural selection was a big topic we talked about in class and in our groups. Natural selection is favouring on certain phenotype and those with phenotype survive and reproduce.

      After doing the vodcast for that day we also did a lab called the hunger games lab, which was pretty fun and helpful. in that lab, we simulated a real life world population of organisms and we tried to survive. when playing the game we have to go to the upper field and formed a circle each person had different types of phenotype which made it harder to get food and survive. after having that done the teacher had corks as the food and started spreading the food randomly in the circle but the students couldn't see how they were placed. in conclusion, we pretty much had to be able to get food and bring it back to out station to actually survive. Structural evidence of evolution was another thing we cover in this unit.

      In this unit, we also covered the evolving population.some stuff to take me consideration is the 3 main things. we talked about directional selection, which is a phenotype that favours one extreme. stabilised selection is another one, which favours the intermediate phenotype, lastly disruptive selection, which favours both extreme phenotypes. there are 5 types of change one is genetic drift which changes allele frequencies due to chance alone. this whole unit has been fun and was really helpful to do those labs we did in class. this unit overall was pretty fun to learn about.
